Industry Recap (Snap + Epic Games Edition):
Snap announced 4th-gen Spectacles at their Snap Partner Summit.
The latest AR glasses can superimpose AR effects, features four built-in microphones, stereo speakers, a touchpad, and 30 minutes of battery life. The new Spectacles are not for sale and are only available for AR effects creators at the moment - apply here! 😎
Snap is also buying WaveOptics, the supplier of the AR displays 👓 for the new Spectacles for more than $500M.
Fun fact: Snap has been paying out $1M per day to creators since November. More than 5,400 creators have collectively earned $130M so far 💸 Snap is rolling this pool back to millions of dollars per month and adding a tipping feature for high-profile creators later this year.
Snap is bringing Bitmoji for Games to Unity… which is great for developers as 200M people use Bitmoji every day #🎮avatarcustomization
Artstation, one of the leading platforms for 2D and 3D artists to showcase their portfolios, joined the Epic Games family and dropped their standard fees from 30% to 12%. Microsoft also announced that they are cutting their 30% fee on PC games to 12% 🤯 Epic Games for the win for triggering this trend in creators’ favor a few years ago with the Epic Games Store.
Epic has also been battling it out in an antitrust lawsuit against Apple, which still collects a 30% commission on the App Store. The trial has concluded + we’re still waiting on the verdict to be delivered… but here are some fun tidbits that came out of the trial in the meantime 🍿

3D CREATOR HIGHLIGHTS… #GOODSTUFF:
RTFKT has been working on virtual sneakers 👟 and collectibles for the metaverse + merging fashion with NFTs. In March, they sold $3.1M worth of NFT sneakers in seven minutes and recently secured $8M in funding.
Kick, push 🛹 @Der_Kevin (creator of LastManSitting and PigeonSimulator) is an amazing game dev building out in the open and his work is stunning… falls and all.
The Mitchells vs. The Machines, a 2D/3D hybrid animation style movie from some of the creators of “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” is Netflix’s most popular release in 2021. Here’s a quick peek at how they got some of their reference shots for character performance ❤️
